Bucksport August 19, 1820.

Respected Friend

Recollecting your request made the day I left Portland to write you respecting any publick affairs as they related to this County. I will state to you what I have heard said was about to take place, and you will perhaps better judge of the expediency of some measures being adopted.

It is said Sir that Mr Watson is to loose [sic] his Office of Sheriff of this County and Mr. Leonard Jarvis is to be his Successor. I have always been of opinion that Mr Jarvis was a Gentleman of a strong mind and have thought the best quallified as a Representative to Congress that lives on the East side of the Penobscot and I once had the success to obtain a large Majority of votes for him in this Town, but it is a fact that he is very unpopular indeed and at every attempt which has been made to set him up with the people has been [one struck through] satisfactorily shown that he looses [sic] at every trial. I have also heard that one Alexander Millikin was a Candidate also [one struck through]. I would only say he has no claims for that Office or any other Office in the gift of the Governor and that he is too bad to be thought of in that
