When Sebattis went into office as governor he was an old party man, but he wished to pursue a liberal policy.

During his term of office he vented his grievances to my father thus: "Great deal trouble, you see, bein' gov'ner. When m'se 'lected me old party man, but me favor new party. When first me gov'ner think so [:] me shall sail our ship jus' so near wind 's we can; never you see such close sailin'; me shall be old party man, same time me shall please new party all me can.
