[Penciled at top of page:] 2 Bates
Norridgewock Nov. 6., 1820
Dear Governor,
As making apologies evinces a consciousness of wrong, I shall not trouble you with any, when I ask your attention to the office of Judge of Probate as it is now filled in Somersett [sic] -
I take it to be conceded, that when a very large majority of the citizens wish for the removal of any Public officer, and there is no earthly reason for his being retained except his bring an incumbent, a change may be safely [one underlined] made to say the least -
That this is the state of Judge McLellan's case, I have not a single doubt -
Should yourself & Honorable council think proper to make a change in this department, I can say that Warren Preston Esquire will meet the approbation of as large a proportion of our citizens as any man amongst us, as I believe -
His personal and legal qualifications being perfectly well known to you, need no comment from me -
I think there will not, at present, be any application for any other; of this, of course, I cannot be certain; but have heard no one mentioned -
